More information. . .
- Kick off your unit with a discovery learning activity to get students interested in the unit, activate their background knowledge, and guide them to construct a basic understanding of the concept on their own!
- Throughout this activity, students think critically about how stories are built, how the parts of stories connect and work together, and why individual elements are so important. Students discuss questions using the guiding pictures, which have them think about puzzles and what needs to be right for a puzzle to be built. Then, they connect this to the concept of literary elements.
- After students construct their own knowledge, clarify and solidify their understanding with THREE direct instruction lesson sets--one for analyzing setting, one for analyzing plot development, and one for analyzing character growth.
- Each lesson set starts with a presentation about how to analyze each element by thinking about mood and theme. The presentation also has doodle notes for students to follow along. Then, there's a scaffolded practice packet where students analyze each element and have a color-coded handout of questions to guide them. Finally, there's a quiz where students answer knowledge-level questions directly from the slides/notes, then analyze elements for two passages on their own.
- After your students have the information, let them practice their skills individually or in small groups with FOUR SETS of differentiated graphic organizers--one for analyzing setting, one for analyzing plot development, and one for analyzing character growth, and one for analyzing all of them.
- You can use these graphic organizers with ANY text to guide students through the thinking process of analyzing each element. Each set has 4 or more graphic organizers to allow you to differentiate for all your students’ current levels of understanding. This is a perfect small group instruction activity or independent formative assessment.
- After students grasp the concepts, have them deepen their understanding with a writing connection activity where they practice using the skills they've learned from analyzing reading by using the elements to convey their choice of mood and theme in their own writing.
- This activity includes the prompt, a prewriting page, multiple options for planning graphic organizers, writing pages, and a peer review page.
- Then, finish your unit with a performance assessment that pulls together everything students have learned by having them practice the skills in an authentic context.
- First, students demonstrate knowledge of how to analyze literary elements by recording their thinking about how they affect mood and theme. They can use one of four note sheets to do this. Then, students think about their notes and how they analyzed the literary elements. They write a paragraph to explain how the elements all affect the mood and theme in the text.
