This bundle includes six engaging activity sets to take you from start to finish in teaching your students how to analyze plot and its effect on the mood and theme of a story.

The activity sets included are. . .

  1. Plot Discovery Learning Activity
  2. Identifying Parts of Plot Lesson Set
  3. Analyzing Plot Lesson Set
  4. Analyzing Plot Graphic Organizers
  5. Analyzing Plot Writing Connection
  6. Analyzing Plot Performance Assessment

More information. . .

  • Kick off your unit with a discovery learning activity to get students interested in the unit, activate their background knowledge, and guide them to construct a basic understanding of the concept on their own!
    • Throughout the activity, students think critically about the impact a plot and its complexity has on a story and why it's important. Students first read reviews of movies with no plot and vote on whether they would want to see it or not. Then, they discuss what was missing from the movies and how important an interesting plot is. Then, as a bonus activity, students rank storylines in order of what seems most interesting. They then discuss their different thinking and what this means about the diversity of literature that authors write.

  • After students construct their own knowledge, clarify and solidify their understanding with TWO direct instruction lesson sets--one for identifying parts of plot and one for analyzing plot.
    • Each lesson set starts with a presentation about (1) what plot is and how to identify it on a plot diagram or (2) how to analyze plot and its development by thinking about mood and theme. The presentation also has doodle notes for students to follow along. Then, there's a scaffolded practice packet where students identify/analyze plot and have a color-coded handout to guide them. Finally, there's a quiz where students answer knowledge-level questions directly from the slides/notes, then identify/analyze plot for two passages on their own.

  • After your students have the information, let them practice their skills individually or in small groups with a set of differentiated graphic organizers.
    • You can use these graphic organizers with ANY text to guide students through the thinking process of analyzing plot development. There are 7 graphic organizers to allow you to differentiate for all your students’ current levels of understanding. This is a perfect small group instruction activity or independent formative assessment.

  • After students grasp the concepts, have them deepen their understanding with a writing connection activity where they practice using the skills they've learned from analyzing reading by using plot progression to convey their choice of mood and theme in their own writing.
    • This activity includes the prompt, a prewriting page, multiple options for planning graphic organizers, writing pages, and a peer review page.

  • Then, finish your unit with a performance assessment that pulls together everything students have learned by having them practice the skills in an authentic context.
    • First, students demonstrate knowledge of how to analyze plot by recording their thinking about how it affects mood and theme. They can use one of four note sheets to do this. Then, students think about their notes and how they analyzed plot. They write a paragraph to explain how the plot development affected the mood and theme in the text.

This whole bundle can be used with any texts that are relevant in your classroom!
