Description

To review approximating square roots in an engaging way, have students find the missing half of their broken heart with this card match. This Valentine's Day activity can be done in several different ways whether in person or distance learning (or teaching both simultaneously). Use this matching activity to have students practice using rational approximations of irrational numbers.

In the print version, there are 32 square roots to approximate, making this ideal for a whole class activity. However, students could easily complete this activity in small groups or pairs. Ideas are included in the instructions. The cards can be printed in black and white on colored paper or cardstock or printed in color.

In the digital version, there are 14 square roots to approximate. Students use Google slides to drag the broken heart halves to their match. (See video preview)

All of the approximations are decimals rounded to the nearest tenth. This is great for Valentine's Day or when there's been a breakup in the class :) I hope you and your students love this activity!

I liked this activity but, they don't match exactly. My students had many that did not match to how they were taught to round them to the nearest tenth, without a calculator. Still, a great activity.

Use rational approximations of irrational numbers to compare the size of irrational numbers, locate them approximately on a number line diagram, and estimate the value of expressions (e.g., π²). For example, by truncating the decimal expansion of √2, show that √2 is between 1 and 2, then between 1.4 and 1.5, and explain how to continue on to get better approximations.
