Description

Have fun practicing the bridge to ten addition strategy (aka "Friends of Ten", "Sums of Ten", or "Make a Ten to Add") with these math center riddle activities. Your students will strategically add three numbers with sums within 20 and develop addition math fact fluency!

Because of the addend combinations in each clue, your students will always be able to start with a sum of ten and then add the third number.

Choosing from four numbers on each card, your students will determine the secret number by eliminating three of the options. With each card they complete, your students will solve three addition number models – lots of practice bridging to ten!

Here's what this addition resource includes!

☛ 24 math riddle cards, printing at four per page

☛ A full page version of each of the 24 riddles

☛ A themed 120 chart for support and easy differentiation

☛ A student recording page

☛ An answer key

☛ An easy prep one page board game that uses the riddle cards to practice the same addition strategies

How will you use this set of activities for addition within 20?

* Use in a math center for individual or partner work

* Use with your document camera for whole class review or to focus attention at the beginning of a math lesson

* Use as a skills review rotation, individually or with partners, with students moving to stations around the classroom to solve the clues

* Use for morning “bell ringers”

* Use the full page riddles to demonstrate on your interactive board, or use them on digital devices with your favorite apps.

Such a cool resource. It was a simple, clear and easy way for students to practice bridging 10. We used it as a whole class, but definitely could be used as an independent activity!

Standards

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
Solve word problems that call for addition of three whole numbers whose sum is less than or equal to 20, e.g., by using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
Apply properties of operations as strategies to add and subtract. If 8 + 3 = 11 is known, then 3 + 8 = 11 is also known. (Commutative property of addition.) To add 2 + 6 + 4, the second two numbers can be added to make a ten, so 2 + 6 + 4 = 2 + 10 = 12. (Associative property of addition.)
Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10. Use strategies such as counting on; making ten (e.g., 8 + 6 = 8 + 2 + 4 = 10 + 4 = 14); decomposing a number leading to a ten (e.g., 13 - 4 = 13 - 3 - 1 = 10 - 1 = 9); using the relationship between addition and subtraction (e.g., knowing that 8 + 4 = 12, one knows 12 - 8 = 4); and creating equivalent but easier or known sums (e.g., adding 6 + 7 by creating the known equivalent 6 + 6 + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13).
