Description
Turn addition and subtraction word problems into a crime-solving investigation students actually care about. Students solve real-world problem solving scenarios involving addition and subtraction across six crime scenes to uncover clues and identify the suspect.
Nothing like a good criminal investigation to liven up addition and subtraction problem solving! In this project, students will work in teams to investigate the culprits of six fictional thefts. The criminal has left six messages, layered with practice. Teams will work to build a case and present their findings to the court. Hopefully, they are convincing enough to win the verdict.
This is an elementary unit with a puzzle-solving hook that causes many different students to engage in solving traditionally mundane problems. 3rd and 4th-grade Common Core Standards are targeted for enrichment and review. Download the preview to see pretty much everything.
In this 20-page document, you will be given a mapping to the Content Standards, an outline for how to implement the project, and six number theory criminal scene puzzles.
