CSI: Color, Symbol, Image is a thinking routine for gathering the essence of ideas nonverbally. Students will use a color, symbol, and image to represent the big idea from the lesson. In this resource, you will find teacher instructions for using this strategy with specific directions, 3 differentiated templates for the CSI for different grade levels, and 3 differentiated symbol options.

This strategy can be used with virtually ANY lesson and ANY subject to engage students in critical thinking. Students represent their thinking about a concept, text, song, picture, etc. It can help facilitate deeper conversations with your students and offer you a chance to see your student’s understanding nonverbally. This routine can also be used countless times throughout the year!

Now this was an activity we really extended and traveled down the rabbit hole with. It was an excellent way to summarize what my students had learned about a particular social studies unit. From this graphic organizer and writing, students created beautiful and very image oriented watercolor products.m
