CVC Word Mapping – Phoneme Grapheme Matching With High-Frequency Words

This supplemental resource includes 34 short vowel, phonetically regular, high-frequency words. There are 2 VC words and 32 CVC words. Each of the words can be represented by an image.

The 34 words include

• 8 short a
• 8 short i
• 5 short u
• 4 short o
• 9 short e

Get started by following the teacher directions to introduce each new word to your students. Complete the word mapping mats together. Provide even more practice when you follow up with the word mapping strips as a center activity.

CVC Rapid Word Charts For Automatic Recognition of High-Frequency Words

This easy-to-prepare, supplemental resource includes 52 short vowel phonetically regular high-frequency words. There are 10 VC words and 42 CVC words. There are 4 words with a final s that stands for /z/.

There are 30 different rapid word charts. Most charts have the same 5 words repeated in 5 rows. The charts are organized by short vowel sounds. Words are grouped by the same vowel and then followed by an integrated, sequential review.

CVC Words - Minimal Contrast Short Vowel Words Decoding Activity

Use sets of similar words to encourage your students to look at every letter when decoding short vowel words without consonant blends and digraphs. You’ll have an easy-to-use way to increase their exposure to phonetically regular high-frequency words and support their development of automatic word recognition.

What are minimal contrast words?

Minimal contrast words are similar, almost the same words. They frequently differ by one letter or one sound.

What words did I choose?

I chose 49 phonetically regular high-frequency short vowel words without consonant blends or digraphs. There are 10 VC words and 39 CVC words. These are the target words.

The target words are presented in pairs and trios contrasted with other similar real words. The only change, typically, is the vowel sound.

There are two sets of s’more CVC word cards. The same words are included in each set. One set has minimal contrast words in pairs. The second set has minimal contrast words in trios. Not all the target words are included in the trios.

Ways to Use This Decoding Activity

With this interactive and fun set of farm-themed puzzles, you’ll have a hands-on targeted decoding/ encoding center activity that reinforces your phonics instruction. Meanwhile, your students will have a blast creating these CVC word picture matches!

I chose 34 phonetically regular high-frequency short vowel words that can be represented by an image. There are 2 VC words and 32 CVC words.

There are two files of puzzles with the same 34 CVC words. Each file has 5 sets of farm-themed puzzles- pigs, barns, chickens, cows, and gardens. One file is organized by vowel. For example, the pig puzzles have only short a words, the barns have short i words, etc. The other file has a mix of all 5 short vowels in each set of 6 to 7 farm puzzles.

Just choose the file that best supports the instructional needs of your students. Each file is available in color and black/ white.
