Description

Changing Numbers From MATH PERSPECTIVES by Kathy Richardson. Assess and develop number sense in your kindergarteners, first graders and second graders with this simple activity. This includes a level II section for changing within units to assess emerging levels of place value understanding.

“Changing Numbers is the understanding that we either add to or take away from one number to make another number and knowing how much to add or take away.

At the most concrete level, use actual counting toys. Next, move to tiny ten frames, (Rekenreks are awesome too) and finally, replace with place value blocks.

During small group time, ask students to show 6. Then say a new number, such as 8, and ask students if they would need to add to their number or take away from it. After they respond, have them change their number to the new number. Continue this same process with additional numbers.

6 Pages of simple number changes (place in page protectors to write/wipe)
4 Level II pages including ten frames
Free sample of tens/ones subitizing cards from the PLACE VALUE BAKERY Number Sense and Unitizing Packing: Cookies Tens and Ones

Cute and helpful in determining if little ones understand if they need to take away or add some when changing numbers. It's important we don't always say add and subtract. They need to know when to do those things. :)

Standards

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
Identify whether the number of objects in one group is greater than, less than, or equal to the number of objects in another group, e.g., by using matching and counting strategies.
Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10. Use strategies such as counting on; making ten (e.g., 8 + 6 = 8 + 2 + 4 = 10 + 4 = 14); decomposing a number leading to a ten (e.g., 13 - 4 = 13 - 3 - 1 = 10 - 1 = 9); using the relationship between addition and subtraction (e.g., knowing that 8 + 4 = 12, one knows 12 - 8 = 4); and creating equivalent but easier or known sums (e.g., adding 6 + 7 by creating the known equivalent 6 + 6 + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13).
