Description
Identifying story elements is a vital skill that students need to read and comprehend fictional texts. Narrative elements such as characters, problem, and solution become a part of identifying the main idea, summarizing, and retelling the story. These Story Elements Task Cards will give your students the practice they need at identifying the main five elements of a story – character, setting, conflict, resolution, and plot. Plus, because I know our standards don’t always use the same language, I’ve included an extra version using the words problem and solution.
Task cards are useful in so many ways. Reading centers, small group instruction, remediation, and whole group activities are a few of the ways you can use these with your students. My students love when I tape our task cards up around the room and they can travel around at their own pace to complete them. It’s so much better than sitting and working through 16 problems on a worksheet.
The texts in these task cards are short and sweet. They provide enough detail for your readers to pick up on clues to determine the story element that is described, but remain a manageable length for lower readers so they don’t get frustrated.
When you download these Story Elements Task Cards, you’ll receive —
- 16 fiction task cards with Character, Setting, Conflict, Resolution, and Plot
- the same 16 cards with Character, Setting, Problem, Solution, and Plot
- 1 student answer recording sheet
- 1 teacher key
This is a ready-to-go activity for your students. All you need to do is print! Laminate the cards for extra durability and to reuse them year after year. Give your students the answer recording sheet and keep a copy of the key for yourself for easy checking. There’s nothing better than a full, engaging activity that requires little work!
* Story and graphic organizer for elements and retelling
Don’t forget, you can earn TpT credits to spend when you review your purchases. Let me know how this goes in your classroom!
