Description

This 34-card deck of self-checking, digital task cards is a fun way to help your math students practice classifying rational numbers! Students are shown one question at a time and LOVE getting instant feedback as they classify whole numbers, integers, and rational numbers (this set does not include irrational numbers).

Boom Cards™ are great for in-class or distance learning and are graded automatically! Check out the preview to try the first 4 cards and see how they work. Make sure to click on the full-size preview and hit submit to see if your answer is correct.

Classifying rational numbers can be a tricky concept for students, so I broke the activity down into the sections described below. My goal by going in this order is to help students understand each type of number separately before looking at combinations of the different types using the graphic organizer. You can hide any cards you don't want students to see when you assign the cards to your students.

Cards 1-9: Whole Numbers (definition, yes/no questions, multiple-choice identifying which numbers are whole)

Cards 10-18: Integers (similar questions as above)

Cards 19-24: Rational Numbers

Cards 25-34: Using Graphic Organizer to sort rational, whole, and integers.

Boom Cards work on just about any device that can access the internet. They're self-checking and you can even track student progress through Boom Learning℠! You can assign Boom Cards (with Google Classroom, Moodle, etc.) to individual students, groups of students, or use with a projector for the whole class. Understand that integers can be divided, provided that the divisor is not zero, and every quotient of integers (with non-zero divisor) is a rational number. If 𝘱 and 𝘲 are integers, then –(𝘱/𝘲) = (–𝘱)/𝘲 = 𝘱/(–𝘲). Interpret quotients of rational numbers by describing real-world contexts.
Convert a rational number to a decimal using long division; know that the decimal form of a rational number terminates in 0s or eventually repeats.
Know that numbers that are not rational are called irrational. Understand informally that every number has a decimal expansion; for rational numbers show that the decimal expansion repeats eventually, and convert a decimal expansion which repeats eventually into a rational number.
