As a teacher, reading is very important to my instruction. Research has proven that children need to be reading at least 30 minutes a day, preferably more! Sometimes my students don’t have adequate resources at their home. I allow them to check out classroom books to take home. Before checking out their book, the students meet with me. We check the condition of the book, and we discuss proper book etiquette. When the students return, they put the book in the check-in bin. At their check-out time, we discuss their previous experience. My students pay for fines and missing books with their classroom community money they earn through good behaviors and their paycheck for working their jobs.
