It’s important for preschoolers to learn all of their basic primary and secondary colors, but one thing that we sometimes forget to teach them is that different colors can come in different shades, tones, and tints. For a preschooler just starting to learn their colors it can be frustrating to see two seemingly different colors and be told that they are both the same color.

Tint: is the mixture of a color with white, which increases lightness.

Shade: is the mixture of a color with black, which reduces lightness.

Tone: is produced either by the mixture of a color with gray, or by both tinting and shading.

This activities is an easy way for your preschoolers to begin to see that the color words we use can look slightly different depending on how much white or black is added.

At this age it isn’t important that they know the vocabulary above, just that they can see the difference.

Print the puzzles on white card stock. Cut out each puzzle board and laminate if you plan to reuse it again in the future. Mix up all of the pieces and let your preschoolers work together as a team to put the puzzles together. Some of the colors are tricky!

This is a simple activity intended to be used as an independent or small group center activity.

Puzzles measure about 8.3" x 8.3". Each of the pieces measures about 2.75" x 2.75".

This activity only comes in full color.
