Description

This set of 24 task cards provides students with practice simplifying an algebraic expression by combining like terms. Students may also be required to apply the distributive property before combining. Questions include addition and subtraction of like terms, but students will not apply integer operations. Note: Now includes a second option, where the directions say, "simplify the algebraic expression", instead of "combine like terms".

Works great as a quiz or test review or just for extra practice after the skill is introduced.

What's included?

  • 24 Task Cards (4 to a page)
  • Student Recording Sheet (mini white boards work as a great alternative!)
  • Answer Key
  • 32 unique MATHO game boards (laminate & reuse or print enough for each student and have them mark answers with a highlighter)

Task Cards: Use the cards for activities such as "scoot", a walkabout activity, or display them under the document camera and have students write their answers on mini whiteboards.

Apply the properties of operations to generate equivalent expressions. For example, apply the distributive property to the expression 3 (2 + š˜¹) to produce the equivalent expression 6 + 3š˜¹; apply the distributive property to the expression 24š˜¹ + 18š˜ŗ to produce the equivalent expression 6 (4š˜¹ + 3š˜ŗ); apply properties of operations to š˜ŗ + š˜ŗ + š˜ŗ to produce the equivalent expression 3š˜ŗ.
Identify when two expressions are equivalent (i.e., when the two expressions name the same number regardless of which value is substituted into them). For example, the expressions š˜ŗ + š˜ŗ + š˜ŗ and 3š˜ŗ are equivalent because they name the same number regardless of which number š˜ŗ stands for.
