Third Grade Problem Solving - Choose the Operation - This is perfect for distance learning on Zoom or similar formats. On top of that it is powerful when used as direct instruction in the classroom. It teaches the students how to recognize the different types of word problems in the four areas of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Four steps of problem solving are emphasized: Figure it out, Set it up, Solve the problem and Look back and check. This lesson is built on 22 effective teaching strategies based on research. For best results, students should have white boards and dry erase markers. Included in this powerpoint lesson are the following:

  • title slide

  • objective
    • Students will be able to decide which operation to use in order to solve a problem.
  • essential questions
    • How can I decide which operation to use when solving a problem?

  • step-by-step demonstrations on how to decide which operation to use when solving a problem
