Description

*This product was revised March 6, 2015. If you purchased the resource before this date, go to My Purchases and download the revised version.*

This resource covers the 6th grade domain, Statistics and Probability. There are lessons and activities on statistical questions, dot plots, histograms, box plots, measures of center, measures of variability and other descriptions of the data set.

1st Activity – Teacher Led Activity
Students identify statistical questions. Data will be collected by the students to use in group activities after they have learned about the different ways to display the data.

2nd Activity – Dot Plots – Teacher Led Activity
The teacher will introduce dot plots as the students complete guided notes on the student handout. Students will be taught how to analyze the data by determining the mean, median, mean absolute deviation, variability, overall shape of the graph, etc. Independent practice is provided.

3rd Activity – Histograms – Teacher Led Activity
The teacher will discuss the information given on histograms. Guided practice and independent practice questions are included.

4th Activity – Box Plots – Teacher Led Activity
Guided notes keep students engaged as they learn about the 5 point summary in a box plot. They will learn how to analyze information in a box plot as well as identify the 5 point summary from a list of data values. The interquartile range (IQR) as a measure of variability is introduced. Guided practice and independent practice questions are included.

5th – Activity – Compare Two Data Sets
This may be used as an independent activity or a small group activity. Students are given data and must construct two box plots on the same graph.

Detailed answer keys are included for these 5 activities.

Three Group Activities are included in the resource. Students will construct and analyze a dot plot, a histogram and a box plot.

This group of lessons fits in extremely well with what I needed for my class. The textbook we use is older and isn't completely aligned with CCSS, so I needed to find something better. The lessons were set up well and each can be taught in a class period, although I did use two days on the dot plots lesson. I will definitely use these lessons next year. Thanks for the great resource!

Dawn, I think that was a great idea to send home a packet for your students. We have never been in this situation before, and it is obvious you are doing your best to keep your students on track with their math. Thank you for your review and rating.

Recognize a statistical question as one that anticipates variability in the data related to the question and accounts for it in the answers. For example, “How old am I?” is not a statistical question, but “How old are the students in my school?” is a statistical question because one anticipates variability in students’ ages.
Understand that a set of data collected to answer a statistical question has a distribution which can be described by its center, spread, and overall shape.
Recognize that a measure of center for a numerical data set summarizes all of its values with a single number, while a measure of variation describes how its values vary with a single number.
