Math Task Cards aligned to the Common Core Math: (Standard: 4.NF.2) - I Can Statement: I can compare two fractions with different numerators and denominators by creating common denominators and using the symbols < , > , = . It contains 52 math questions in ALL!! (Multiple Choice, Multiple Select, Unknown Answer, Short Answer, Fill in the blank).

  1. Students will be able to use their understanding of equivalence of fractions as a stepping stone for developing an understanding of how to compare fractions. These task cards will give students multiple ways to look at these comparisons.
  2. Students will be able to use benchmark fractions such as 1/2 and 1.
  3. Students will be encourage students to use their number sense as they are comparing fractions as opposed to a rote set of memorized procedural steps.
  4. Students will be able to develop a conceptual understanding of fractional comparisons using number lines as a valuable tool.
  5. Students will be able to move beyond simply comparing two fractions to ordering a set of fractions with increasing variance in denominators.

Compare two fractions with different numerators and different denominators, e.g., by creating common denominators or numerators, or by comparing to a benchmark fraction such as 1/2. Recognize that comparisons are valid only when the two fractions refer to the same whole. Record the results of comparisons with symbols >, =, or <, and justify the conclusions, e.g., by using a visual fraction model.
