Description

This workbook of problems using and constructing number lines is designed to help students improve their mathematical competency in applying number lines to:

· Add and subtract positive and negative integers

· Multiply positive integers

· Multiplication of fractional numbers and whole numbers

The activities contained in the students’ workbook increases in difficulty level.

There is ample research to show that when students work effectively with the number line model, they develop greater flexibility in mental arithmetic as they construct mathematical meaning, number sense, ad understanding of number relationships.

This workbook has five activities.

Activity 1— Addition of Whole Numbers (3 problems)

Activity 2— Subtraction of Whole Numbers (3 problems)

Activity 3— Addition and Subtraction with Positive and Negative Numbers (2 problems)

Activity 4— Multiplication of Whole Numbers (2 problems)

Activity 5— Multiplication of Whole Numbers and Fractional Numbers (2 problems)

Each of the activities relates to the use of a specific number line, and there is a short introduction on how to use the number line.

In activities 1—4, the students are encouraged to write equations to represent the problems and model the problem solution using the number line.
