Human Body: Introduction to Organs and Organ Systems

This lesson is designed to introduce students to some of the major organs and organ systems in the human body. The lesson is planned as an exploration. So instead of the teacher telling students what the main parts of the human body are and telling students where they are located, and what they do—the teacher provide students with the opportunity to explore so students can reveal their misconceptions. The exploration is a group work activity, which allows students to collaborate and make group d

Professional Development Workshop for Teachers: Teaching Strategies

Working with teacher candidates and new teachers during the induction year, one thing I found that these young teachers struggled with was being able to ask effective questions and delivering explanations. Questions they ask are often closed questions, or are not relevant to what the students had explored. Furthermore the explanations were often non-existent. This package was designed as a continuous professional development workshop for teacher candidates and new teachers to help them strength

Friction - Card Sort Activity

This activity is a card sort activity you can use at the start of a lesson on friction, or maybe even at the end to lead a class into discussing science and improving students' science communications. The students sort the statements as TRUE FALS and PARTIALLY TRUE. This can lead to a discussion to find out what they chose to be true or false. Where students choose partially true you can ask them questions to determine why: Can you give examples where this is true? Can you give examples where

Units of Measurements - Study Guide for Chemistry Students

This is a study guide specifically for students who are following a chemistry course at high school. It is an introduction to using the metric system for measuring and recording length, mass, and volume. The students can be given the study guide for independent studying or for the teacher to use in a student-centered classroom. This is because the study guide is constructed in a way that students can review the essential material, go over, examples and work through the problems. By working thro

Teaching style

Scientific discoveries were made through investigations. I was in scientific research before teaching, and I cannot think of teaching science in any other way. I believe that teaching should focus not just on engaging students in the classroom, but also in developing their conceptual understanding.
