Science Practices - Independent/Dependent Variables and Tabulating/Graphing Data

Do you want your students to be able to.... Identify variables from a description of the investigation?Operationally define variables in an investigation?Identify the independent and dependent variables?Construct tables of data from measurements made during an investigation?Construct graphs from tables of data?Use graphs to describe the relationship between variables? If so then this might be a package that you could use in your classroom. This package consists of a student workbook and teacher g

Hypotheses and Predictions: Nature of Science Simulation Activity

This is an activity is ONE Lesson. In this lesson students explore what a scientific hypothesis really means. Textbooks, and hence teachers tend to use hypothesis and prediction interchangeably to mean the same thing. But they really are different. This lesson shows this difference. Furthermore, a hypothesis is often referred to as "an educated guess." This is how the term 'hypothesis' is used in the social context. However, in the field of science, a hypothesis is NOT a guess. Referring it to

Making Observations - Collecting Qualitative and Quantitative Data

What do scientists mean when they say they make observations? What exactly do they mean by the term ‘observation’?Are they simply looking at something or is there more to it than meets the eye? The biggest misconception students take on with respect to making observations is that looking at something using just their sense of sight is ‘making observations.’ This package consists of two lessons. In the first lesson students will learn how to use their senses of sight, touch, and smell to colle

Introduction to Forces

This product consists of two lessons you could use to introduce students to understanding forces. In Lesson 1 the students learn to define a force and explore different types of contact and non-contact forces. In Lesson 2 the students learn the difference between mass and weight and learn to measure the magnitude of a force exerted by an object.

Tables, Graphs, and Variables

This product is a workbook that assess students’ ability to:· Construct a table to organize data from an experiment · Construct a table of data from a graph · Construct a graph from a table of data · Identify dependent and independent variables · Describe in writing the relationship between variables on a graph. The workbook can be given as homework or as extensions to work related to science practice skills. You can also give the workbook as independent work. Students receive practic

Why don't we have paper spoons? A scientific inquiry for the curious mind

This is an awesome investigation for students to test a hypothesis, and learn about the nature of science - i.e., how science works in practice. In this lesson, the teacher poses the question, "Why don't we have paper spoons?" through setting a scenario. The teacher also provide students with two hypotheses, and students pick one and plan a procedure themselves to either support or refute the hypothesis they have chosen. The students are not assessed on reaching a 'correct' answer to the questio

Investigating Friction

This is an investigation that takes your students through a full investigation to explore the concept of friction through a 5 E lesson. The investigation is designed to run over three periods of forty minutes, though it can be shortened to two periods. Constructing and Testing Hypotheses

This package was designed to help students construct hypotheses. The terms ‘hypothesis’ and ‘prediction’ are often used interchangeably when they are in fact two different concepts. In addition, the term ‘hypothesis’ is often defined as ‘an educated guess.’ This definition is misleading and incorrect. A hypothesis is a tentative statement that guide experimental design. The package consists of a PowerPoint presentation and accompanying handouts. Contents of this packageThe first problem (what

Exploring Weight and Friction - A Graphing Activity

About this LessonThis lesson was designed using the 5E teaching and learning model—Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate that takes students through designing an investigation and executing their design, They learn to collect and organize data into tables and charts and analyze the data and formulate a conclusion to answer the research question: How does the force needed to move a sled change as the masses added to the sled is changed?Learning Objectives•To be able to design an inves
Preview of Classification Assessment

Classification Assessment

Classification is a skill that is central to concept formation. We impose order by observing similarities, differences, and interrelationships and grouping objects accordingly to suit some purpose. This lesson is designed to assess students’ ability to classify a given set of organisms based on their observable characteristics. This package is designed to be used as an assessment of students’ understanding of binary and multi-stage classification systems.

Experience

Teacher of elementary, middle, and high school grades for 13 years. Involved in preparing teachers and running Professional Development Workshops as well as teaching.

Teaching style

Scientific discoveries were made through investigations. I was in scientific research before teaching, and I cannot think of teaching science in any other way. I believe that teaching should focus not just on engaging students in the classroom, but also in developing their conceptual understanding.

My own education history

Bachelors Honors - Major in Biology and Chemistry PhD in Organic Chemistry Ed.D in Science Education
