Modelling Population Growth - Ecology and Ecosystem

This product provide students with the opportunity to explore and model the growth of an unconstrained population. Students are introduced to a scenario relating to population of rabbits. The students are then taken through a step-by-step process to model this population using a spreadsheet, in this case EXCEL Then they are asked to see what happens to the population when they change the rate of of growth of the population and the starting population. This product is ideal if you are teaching p

Landscaping in Fractions: Application of Fractional Numbers

This is a package of five lessons based on the real world application of fractional numbers. The lessons are based on the application of mathematics in a real-world problem solving. So each lesson begins with a scenario. The main idea for these five lessons is based on a landscaping company hired to landscape areas of a town where students are applying their knowledge of fractional numbers, area, perimeter, decimal numbers, and degrees in a circle The lessons are planned as follows: Lesson 1—st

Making Observations - Collecting Qualitative and Quantitative Data

What do scientists mean when they say they make observations? What exactly do they mean by the term ‘observation’?Are they simply looking at something or is there more to it than meets the eye? The biggest misconception students take on with respect to making observations is that looking at something using just their sense of sight is ‘making observations.’ This package consists of two lessons. In the first lesson students will learn how to use their senses of sight, touch, and smell to colle

Modelling Predator-Prey Relationships

About this ProductThis lesson is the third in the series of modelling populations using EXCEL. The first was Modelling Population Growth where students modeled an unconstrained population to explore exponential growth when there is an abundance of resources and no limitations for growth. The second was Modelling Competition where students explored a population when competition for resources is taken into consideration. This third lesson takes the students through modelling the relationship bet

Measurement and Data: Picture Graphs and Bar Graphs

This is a bundle of four lessons designed to teach students how to construct picture graphs and bar graphs. The lessons are based on the Common Core State Standards Grade 2 Measurement & Data: Represent and Interpret data. The lesson design uses a Learning Cycle that incorporates a three-phase model to encourage meaningful learning, particularly found to be effective for activities involving data collection and analysis. The theme running through the four lessons is ‘Day at the Beach’ where a

Fractions of Pie: A Pie Day Activity

This product is a bundle of three lessons on the application of fractions in a real-world situation, which works nicely as a part of a unit or as an extension or review activity after teaching fractions. It begins with a lesson showing students that cutting a circle in two is not the same ad dividing a circle into two halves. The lesson then extend students' understanding of this concept by a series of problems where students learn to divide circles into fractions. Lesson 2 sets the scenario to

Area and Perimeter: Collecting Evidence to Support or Refute a Statement

This is a lesson exploring area and perimeter. In this lesson the students use area and perimeter calculations to test a statement. Hence they go through the process of collecting evidence and identifying patterns in the data to come up with a conclusion. The lesson is organized in the 5 E format starting with a very short Engagement. Exploration is finding the answer to the question, Explanation is led first by the students explaining what they had found, and then by the teacher revealing the
