Description
This product is made up of 7 lessons where students engage in exploring and learning about our solar system and learning to carry out scientific investigations as well as getting involved in the engineering design process to design and test space modules.
The lesson plans are designed in a way to involve students in research so they learn to find factual information about space travel.
Included in this package are; lesson plans, worksheets, instructions for activities, and homework assignments.
Lesson 1 – students explore what it means by ‘solar system’. In this lesson misconception about the solar system are uncovered.
Lesson 2 – students use orbit data to predict distance from the sun and use models to explore eclipses
Lesson 3 – students plan and carry out an investigation to explore impact of meteorites on the surface of the moon.
Lesson 4 – students design space modules - in this lesson students use their ideas of force, pressure, gravity and air resistance to inform their design. This is a perfect opportunity for students to begin to see how science and engineering are inter-connected and rely on each other for progress.
Lesson 5 – students test their space modules
*Lesson 6 – students explore adaptations of an organism for a newly discovered planet
*Lesson 7 – students explore how scientists could make the newly discovered planet habitable for humans.
*Lesson 6 and 7 relies on students' understanding of biological processes of adaptation, photosynthesis, and respiration.
This lesson involves students exploring space through independent research of websites for information. It is a good opportunity to discuss what are valid sources and what are fake sources to find factual information to further understanding of science.
