  • Teaching Page: An introductory section that explains rhythm counting with clear examples of quarter, half, and eighth notes, as well as eighth rests. Short, focused practice exercises help reinforce understanding.
  • Practice Page: A set of 28 measures for students to practice writing in beat numbers, reinforcing the connection between rhythmic notation and its corresponding beats in 4/4 time.
  • Missing Barline Page: A dedicated practice page with 28 measures where students will add barlines to complete the measures in 4/4 time, helping them internalize time signatures and measure structure.

Designed specifically for beginning band students, this workbook makes rhythm learning hands-on and accessible, providing both visual and practical reinforcement of fundamental rhythm skills. I used these worksheet to transition my 4th graders over from "ta" and "ti-ti" to counting with numbers. They quickly grasped the concept and completed the worksheets faster than I anticipated!

The "ruler" element is really helpful for some of my beginning band kids. I draw the ruler on the board all the time when talking about duration, so this was a real time saver. Sometimes we color in the ruler (different color for each note) as another visual way to show duration. If they grasp this, then dotted quarters become an easy next step.
