Description
This Introduction to Ethics course provides a comprehensive exploration of ethical theories and their practical applications across eight engaging modules. Starting with foundational concepts, students will delve into Virtue Ethics through Aristotle’s view of character and moral development, Deontological Ethics with Kant's duty-based framework, and Utilitarianism focusing on consequentialist approaches by Bentham and Mill. Social Contract Theory examines the role of societal agreements in shaping justice, while Feminist Ethics introduces critiques of traditional theories through the ethics of care. A special module on Christian Ethics explores theological foundations, natural law, and moral principles such as love and justice. Finally, Applied Ethics brings theory to life with real-world issues in bioethics, environmental ethics, and business ethics. A 6-minute video in the listing provides an in-depth introduction to each module and the course's unique features.
Ideal Age Group:
- 11th and 12th-grade High School Students
- Freshmen and Sophomores in college/university
If you take a close look at the video I uploaded (in case it didn't upload, click here to watch) and the images in the listing, you will see that each module/week includes the following with only slight variations:
- Table of Contents
- Learning Objectives for each week that begin with a verb associated with one of six levels of Bloom's Taxonomy (these were created from the reading, quiz questions, and reflection)
- Assigned reading in the document that can be copied and pasted elsewhere (2,000–3,000 words)
- Additional assigned reading from sites where other professors have written on certain topics and/or links to online abridged primary texts (I made a special point to only link resources that were appropriate lengths)
- Crash Course Video Link & Quiz where applicable
- Hyperlinks to additional YouTube videos for the topic that week (these could easily be used to create more assessments or whatever in case you need to expand this course or stretch it out to 15 weeks
- Weekly quiz based on the assigned reading
- Weekly Reflection that can also be used as a Discussion in case you are using this course in a Learning Management System such as Canvas or Blackboard
Also included are 11 Additional Ethics-related PowerPoints from my store. This can be used as supplementary material. They range from 20–40 slides, are masterfully designed, and present the content in a clear and engaging manner without overloading each slide (which would make them too "clunky"). Here is a list of the PowerPoints:
- Aristotle's Virtue Ethics
- Intro to Christian Ethics
- Feminist Ethics
- Moral Universalism and Moral Relativism
- Rawls' Theory of Justice
- Sermon on the Mount
- Singer - Famine, Affluence, and Morality
- Stoicism
- Epicureanism
- The Deontological Ethics of Immanuel Kant
- Utilitarianism
The course is extremely organized, easily adaptable, and built from my years of experience. Also, as I shared in the video, ChatGPT was used in the creation of this course in conjunction with my expertise and experience.
All you will need to do is decide on how to use the course based on your time frame (Eight weeks? 15 weeks?). Second, you will need to assign a point value based on how your course is scored (percentage? points?). Third, you can choose to ignore and/or add anything that you personally feel is important as you personalize the course to meet your needs.
