Description

Can your students break the code?

In this engaging activity, students become "Code Breakers." They must find the Common Factors of specific number pairs to unlock a cipher and reveal a hidden secret message (a fun joke/riddle).

BUILT-IN DIFFERENTIATION: We know every classroom has mixed abilities. This resource includes two versionsof the same puzzle:

  1. Level A (Scaffolded): Includes "Hint" columns (e.g., tells students how many factors to look for) to support struggling learners.
  2. Level B (Challenge): No hints. Standard version for on-level or advanced students.

WHY TEACHERS LOVE IT:

  • Self-Checking: If the joke doesn't make sense, the math is wrong! Students catch their own mistakes.
  • Inclusive: The two versions look almost identical, so students don't feel singled out.
  • Critical Thinking: Applies math to a logic puzzle.

INCLUDES:

  • 2 PDF Worksheets (With & Without Hints).
  • Answer Key (The reveal).

Find the greatest common factor of two whole numbers less than or equal to 100 and the least common multiple of two whole numbers less than or equal to 12. Use the distributive property to express a sum of two whole numbers 1–100 with a common factor as a multiple of a sum of two whole numbers with no common factor. For example, express 36 + 8 as 4 (9 + 2).
