Engage Students with a Hands-On Line Plot Project!

Looking for an interactive and meaningful way to assess your students’ understanding of line plots? This project combines learning targets, collaboration, technology, and critical thinking in a fun and engaging activity.

Project Overview:

Students will work with a partner to design a data collection question, gather and analyze real-world data, and create a detailed line plot using fraction intervals. The project emphasizes mathematical skills and creativity while encouraging teamwork.

What Students Will Do:

Develop a Question – Create a data-driven question to collect information from classmates. (Examples: "In inches, how long is your hand?" or "In cm, what is the circumference of your head?") Teacher approval required.

Gather Data – Collect at least 20 data points.

Create a Line Plot – Use the collected data to design a detailed line plot.

    • Include a title
    • Divide the number line into appropriate intervals
    • Label the number line clearly

Analyze the Data – Calculate the mean, median, mode, and range, and show your work.

Design Quiz Questions – Create 4 questions that classmates can answer using the line plot.

    • For each question, generate a QR Code answer key so students can check their responses.

Produce a Final Copy – Submit a polished, teacher-approved version after completing a rough draft.

Included Features:

  • 15+ Student Samples – Inspire creativity and set clear expectations.
  • Grading Rubric – Streamline evaluation with detailed criteria.
  • Google Doc Template – Easily share with students through Google Classroom or Drive.

Why Your Students Will Love It:

  • Encourages collaboration and teamwork
  • Combines math, technology, and real-world problem solving
  • Provides opportunities to create and analyze data in an interactive way

Make a line plot to display a data set of measurements in fractions of a unit (1/2, 1/4, 1/8). Use operations on fractions for this grade to solve problems involving information presented in line plots. For example, given different measurements of liquid in identical beakers, find the amount of liquid each beaker would contain if the total amount in all the beakers were redistributed equally.
