Text Types Templates: Creative Writing Challenge

Jumpstart your students’ creativity and deepen their understanding of different text formats with these ready-to-use "Codebreaking Text Types" templates. This Google Docs resource features six distinct text type templates—News Article, Email, Web Blog, Tweet, Pamphlet, and Personal Letter—designed to engage students in a fun and interactive writing challenge which is linked here. Each template is stripped of text, leaving only a silly image as a prompt, allowing students to reconstruct the text type with their own creative stories.

Resource Overview:

  • Included Text Types: News Article, Email, Web Blog, Tweet, Pamphlet, Personal Letter
  • Format: Google Docs, ready for printing and classroom use
  • Activity Structure:
    • Each student group receives a different text type template featuring a silly image and blank space where the content usually goes.
    • Students must first identify and label the key components of their assigned text type (e.g., headline, greeting, hashtags).
    • Using the silly image as inspiration, students collaboratively write a creative story or piece that fits the format and tone of their text type.
    • The same image can be used across all groups, or different images can be provided for variety.

Student Learning Objectives:

  • Text Type Recognition: Identify and understand the unique components and structures of different text types.
  • Creative Expression: Craft a narrative or content piece that aligns with the style and conventions of the assigned text type.
  • Team Collaboration: Work together to reconstruct a coherent and engaging text from the provided template.

Benefits for Teachers:

  • Engaging and Fun: Combines structured learning with creativity, making writing practice enjoyable for students.
  • Versatile and Flexible: Can be used in a variety of classroom settings, for different grade levels, or even as a substitute plan.
  • Customizable: The silly image can be swapped out for different prompts to suit various classroom themes or topics.
