Description

Converting units of measurement - introduce or review units and conversions using this engaging math wheel!

  • You can use the wheel as you discuss the different categories of measurement, completing one section at a time over a period of days.
  • Or, you can use it as a review after you’ve taught the concepts. Either way, students can keep the wheel in their notebooks or binders as a reference sheet/mini anchor chart.

What is a math wheel? A math wheel is a type of graphic organizer where students can:

  • Take notes inside the math wheel
  • Use color, drawing, and doodling to help create memory triggers
  • Complete practice problems in the pattern around the wheel, and
  • Color the background pattern

Students can keep these graphic organizers in their interactive notebooks all year as a resource/study tool. The wheels are excellent for reviewing concepts as part of your test prep!

  • You can even enlarge the math wheels and use them as posters or anchor charts.

The customary measurement wheel sections include:

1) Length (inch, foot, yard, mile)

2) Weight (ounce, pound, ton)

3) Capacity (cup, pint, quart, gallon)

4) Time (second, minute, hour, day, year)

This easy-prep customary measurement resource includes:

1) THREE versions of the student wheel

  • ‘Open’ for students to write notes (this version is most flexible, allowing you to make the wheel as much ‘your own’ as possible)
  • ‘Fill-in’ notes, to help control student use of space – on this version, there are blanks for one part of each conversion, like ______ days = 1 yr. This version also includes the abbreviations for each unit.
  • Pre-filled notes; answers to examples and practice problems are NOT on this version

⭐️Each version comes with a patterned background AND with no pattern in background.

2) Teacher key/wheel with completed notes and examples

3) Colored sample of wheel

4) PowerPoint file with two editable wheel templates ~ you can add text to make your own math wheels, if you’d like (for classroom use only - not commercial use).

Features of this easy-to-use measurement resource:

1) For the suggested notes, each section includes the abbreviation for each unit and the equivalences of the units (ex: 12 in = 1 ft, 3 ft = 1 yd, etc.). Added along the sides of 2 sections are suggested notes about multiplying/dividing when converting from big to small/small to big units. These are just suggestions.

2) The ‘big G’ for capacity equivalences is a great visual for students:

  • Add 4 Qs inside the G since there are 4 quarts in a gallon
  • Add 2 Ps inside each Q for 2 pints in a quart
  • Inside the Ps, add 2 Cs for 2 cups in each pint

3) Guided practice or individual practice: 12 practice problems in the pattern around in which students convert units of length, capacity, time, and weight

4) Coloring/doodling opportunity: students can color the background pattern, as well as the headings and doodle arrows, however they like

Coloring the background, if you use the patterned versions:

  • Students don’t HAVE to color at all during instructional time….coloring the background could be an ‘early finisher’ activity, center activity, homework, etc.
  • Students don’t need to color every section of the background – part of their coloring pattern could be to leave sections white.
  • Students could color sections with patterns instead of solids – maybe polka dots in one section and squiggly lines in another.
  • This coloring part is just a chance to be creative and enjoy the stress-relief coloring can provide:-)

These Converting Customary Units of Measurement guided notes with the math wheel were a fantastic resource for my 5th graders. The math wheel added a fun, interactive element that helped students visualize and remember the conversion steps easily. The notes were clear, well-organized, and perfect for guided math sessions. My students enjoyed using the wheel and said it made learning conversions much less intimidating. I highly recommend this for any teacher wanting to make measurement conversions more interactive and accessible!
