Data Collection and Analysis Project
Share

Description

This project was designed to help students understand how data functions in their daily lives. The goal of this project is for students to:

  • Collect Data
  • Analyze Data
  • Mean
  • Median
  • Mode
  • Standard Deviation
  • Z-Score
  • Normal Distribution
  • Percentages
  • Write a few sentences to solidify their understanding of how the mathematical concepts they used pertain to the data they collected.

This project is in 3 parts.

  • Part 1 - Data Collection - EXCEL AND WALKTHROUGH DOC
    • Students must download an Excel document (doing it on paper is very difficult)
    • Collect data that they find interesting. Most students use their screen time from their phones.
    • Download the walkthrough document that has ALL the directions as best as can be described.
    • Complete the entire Excel sheet and turn it in for review.
      • Included physical document for students that do not have excel/sheets

  • Part 2 - Empirical Rule
    • Students must fill in the empirical rule with their data.
    • They will walk through the questions to find specific percentages and answer the questions.
    • Short 2-sentence review at the end.

  • Part 3 - Understanding Normal Distribution
    • Students will use z-scores and their data to answer the questions
    • They will answer questions that pertain to normal distribution percentages that were talked about in class.
    • Write short sentences pertaining to the information that was found for the normal distribution percentages

This project was recently updated on 4/11/25 based on my student's completion of the project. You can change this project as you see fit. My opinion is to include more writing prompts. This is a good project for long state testing days or to do for about 3 class periods. The information is relatively simple to understand and complete with the appropriate background.
