Description

Debug the Code introduces students to the concept of debugging and coding. Each card presents a program or algorithm that students must analyze. Their task is to cut and sort the components into columns labeled "Works" and "Needs Debugging." If you are seeing multiple classes, the pieces could be laminated and used for each class. An extension activity could have students fix the codes that need to be debugged.

Includes:

  • 3 differentiated sorts
  • Debug vocab posters
  • Answer Key
  • Exit ticket

The debugging sort can be differentiated using the stars in the top right of the sort cards.

3 stars – hard – longer codes, mistakes aren’t as obvious

2 stars – medium – mixture of hard and easy

1 star – easy – shorter codes, usually the easiest way to get there, mistakes are obvious

I used this as a warm up activity/time filler for my coding club with late elementary students. We don't typically spend a lot of time just focused on debugging, so this was a good activity for the students to get some extra practice in. And then they worked in pairs and checked each other's progress.

I had planned to use it with my 2-5th graders. Unfortunately my curriculum changed and I am no longer teaching coding.

This made a great station for my students to rotate through during our coding camp. They spent about 30 minutes on it, and it introduced our beebot commands perfectly. Loved using it. Thanks for a well-thought-out resource!
