Decimals 4th grade: Decimals 4th grade Adding and Subtracting Decimals and Whole Numbers Using the Standard Algorithm and Additional Strategies
| 4.4A | TEKS | 4.4A TEK | 4th grade | Fourth grade|Addition| Subtraction | Decimals | Whole Numbers | Standard Algorithm | Multiple Strategies | Number lines | tenths | hundredths |place value | subtracting across zeros |
This PowerPoint presentation carefully lays out the connection between place value and the standard algorithm to add and subtract whole numbers and decimals to the hundredths place. Students will understand the steps to the algorithm rather than just memorize the steps without any understanding of why the numbers regroup or decompose. Students practice, interact and participate during the presentation. Later, there are practice pages to support a better understanding of decimals.
There are several pictorial models such as base-ten blocks and number lines so students will be able to view the process in many different ways. The animation allows for students to see step by step the concept of borrowing, carrying, decomposing, and/or regrouping.
In response to a buyer's request, an additional bonus has been added. Both the PowerPoint and Practice Pages include a mental math strategy which adjusts the addends and/or minuend and subtrahend to create a "friendlier" solution. This is especially beneficial for the concept of subtracting across zeros.
Students will develop a better understanding of what a decimal is and how the decimal point is used. Real world problems related to Texas History are used and practiced to increase student engagement and mathematical understanding.
The presentation is self directed. Once the presentation has been used in whole group it can be placed in a work station where students can review individually or perhaps see what they missed on a day they were absent.
The PowerPoint and Practice Pages are sold together in this product. They are also sold separately as individual resources.
