Description

Decimals: Multiplying, Rounding to Hundredths, & Ordering ~ Crack the Code! is a fun and engaging way for students (grades 5-7) to get computation practice with decimals. They’ll enjoy the challenge and feedback is immediate through solving the puzzles (quotes from The Phantom Tollbooth) correctly.

These Crack the Code puzzles have four steps. First, students must successfully multiply and then round their answers to hundredths. Next, they must place their answers in order from greatest to least, thus making the alphabet a number line from A to Z. (There are two puzzles in this resource, one ordering from greatest to least, the second puzzle ordering from least to greatest.) Finally, students find the corresponding numbers in the code and place that number’s letter in the blank.

Built-in problem-solving challenges include computation errors, rounding inaccurately, and ordering the decimals incorrectly. If they make a computation error, it can throw off ordering the decimals correctly and cause problems in cracking the code. Or, maybe they get all the computation correct, but they’re off in ordering the decimals. Their challenge will be finding a way to track down their errors, make their corrections and successfully Crack the Code.

Included in this resource:

♦ Multiplication of decimals/whole numbers

♦ Rounding to nearest hundredth

♦ Ordering decimals

♦ Teaching Notes and Answer Key

♦ 20 problems in each puzzle, student copies in BW

♦ Aligns with CCSS

Really fun decimal worksheet. We read The Phantom Tollbooth so this also was a fun reminder of some of the lessons Milo learns.

As a math/ELA teacher this was a great way to integrate both subjects! I used it as my opening activity for PT. The students loved cracking the codes and the conversations afterward about what the quotes really meant were amazing!

I'm so glad it was helpful! As a self-contained classroom teacher, combining subjects and making connections is my favorite thing to do. Be sure to check out the fraction/decimal Crack the Code bundle with more quotes for The Phantom Tollbooth. :)

Standards

Use place value understanding to round decimals to any place.
Add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals to hundredths, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used.
Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. Mathematically proficient students start by explaining to themselves the meaning of a problem and looking for entry points to its solution. They analyze givens, constraints, relationships, and goals. They make conjectures about the form and meaning of the solution and plan a solution pathway rather than simply jumping into a solution attempt. They consider analogous problems, and try special cases and simpler forms of the original problem in order to gain insight into its solution. They monitor and evaluate their progress and change course if necessary. Older students might, depending on the context of the problem, transform algebraic expressions or change the viewing window on their graphing calculator to get the information they need. Mathematically proficient students can explain correspondences between equations, verbal descriptions, tables, and graphs or draw diagrams of important features and relationships, graph data, and search for regularity or trends. Younger students might rely on using concrete objects or pictures to help conceptualize and solve a problem. Mathematically proficient students check their answers to problems using a different method, and they continually ask themselves, "Does this make sense?" They can understand the approaches of others to solving complex problems and identify correspondences between different approaches.
