"I've been using these resources all year! My kids love seeing who the culprit is or where the hidden items are located. I use the editable suspect list and add my own students' names in! This decimal one was great for the end of year when we had open pockets of time. "

Description

This decimals review covers comparing, ordering, converting, and writing decimals. It is a fun math mystery activity designed to engage and motivate your class while getting lots of decimal practice! Perfect for review, test practice, early finishers, or the sub-tub. Students will use their math skills to solve the Case of The Disappearing Donuts.

Easy prep! Just Print & Solve! Or go paperless with the new Google Slides option provided within your download.

A video hook is provided to set the stage to engage! Check out the video hook in the preview section.

A bonus ENDING VIDEO clip is included to celebrate finishing the mystery.

(Update - voice-overs added to the videos)

Distance Learning Update: I've added a Word Document in the folder containing a Google Slides link to share this resource with your students via Google Classroom or Drive. Parts of the pages are editable, so your students can complete them without printing. Please note you will need to make a copy of the Google Slides to your drive before you can edit.

Preparation

- No Prep required! Print the student pages, staple or place

them in a folder, and your students are set to go.

- Have the video hook ready for viewing at the start of the

lesson on an IWB, iPad, or computer monitor screen.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Math Skills Required to Unlock Clues

There are five clues to crack to solve the mystery:

  • Clue 1: Comparing Decimals (tenths, hundredths)
  • Clue 2: Convert Fractions to Decimals (Denominators of 10 and 100 only)
  • Clue 3: Convert Decimals to Fractions (Denominators of 10 and 100 only)
  • Clue 4: Writing Decimals from Models (tenths, hundredths)
  • Clue 5: Ordering Decimals (tenths, hundredths)

Students must use critical thinking skills to figure out what the clue is telling them to eliminate from the list of possibilities.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Multiple Uses

- Suitable for independent, pairs, or group work.

- Use as part of your math centers, add to your sub tubs, make it part of your early finisher tasks, give for homework, or make it part of your classroom practice/review sessions.

I recommend pacing this activity by giving students one clue at a time. Once the whole class has completed a clue, then move on to the next clue either within the same lesson or the next math session. New math content presented? Make a lesson out of it by modeling the math before diving into the clue. I like to say, "we must learn something new before attempting the next clue."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How long will this activity take?

Time to complete will vary anywhere between 30mins - 2 hours or more! It mainly depends on how familiar your students are with the math mystery format and how difficult they find math skills covered in the particular mystery. Please check the math skills outlined in the clues above to help determine suitability for your class.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- Select a higher-grade version of this mystery if you want more challenging math skills.

Standards

Use decimal notation for fractions with denominators 10 or 100. For example, rewrite 0.62 as 62/100; describe a length as 0.62 meters; locate 0.62 on a number line diagram.
Compare two decimals to hundredths by reasoning about their size. Recognize that comparisons are valid only when the two decimals refer to the same whole. Record the results of comparisons with the symbols >, =, or <, and justify the conclusions, e.g., by using a visual model.
