Do you need quick and effective phonics assessments for decoding words? This phonics progress monitoring assessments complement structured, systematic, and sequential phonics instruction. These quick checks will determine which skills your students have mastered.
What is in this Phonics Assessment Bundle?
1. One Page of Phonics Quick Checks - Teacher Copy
- Print a teacher page for each of your students you will assess. Keep these in a data folder for each student.
2. One Page of Phonics Quick Checks - Page Students Copy
- Have all 5 Phonics Assessments on 1 page for your students. Print these on cardstock and stick them in a plastic sleeve.
3. Five Pages of the Phonics Quick Checks - Extra Large Print Student Copy
- You’ll only need to print the student pages once. Laminate them or slip them into plastic sleeve protectors so you can use them repeatedly.
Each Phonics Quick Check has two phonics assessments:
- Decoding words (real and nonsense words)
- Decodable Sentences (connect to text)
- Also included is a page that clearly explains how to administer and use the assessment to guide your instruction.

When should I Use these Phonics Assessments?
1. Identify which phonics intervention your students need.
- I always administer this at the beginning of every school year. Once my students are identified as needing Tier 2 phonics intervention, I use this to place my students in groups. I can tell exactly which phonics skills my students have mastered and which skills they need to work on2.
2. Pre and Post-Phonics Intervention Assessments
- These phonics assessments are an excellent resource for baseline data on phonics interventions. I give a pre-assessment before instruction and a post-assessment to see how they retained the phonics skills.
3. Phonics Quick Checks for Progress Monitoring Throughout Your Phonics Instruction.
- Use these as a progress monitoring tool during your phonics intervention. I assess my students' progress weekly. The information I gather guides my instruction and tells me exactly what my students are learning.
The skills included in this phonics assessment are:
- Unit 1: Letters to Words
- Unit 2: Word Families (CVC)
- Unit 3: Double Consonants - FLoSS Rule
- Unit 4: Consonant Digraphs
- Unit 5: Beginning Consonant Blends
- Unit 6: Ending Blends
- Unit 7: Silent e
- Unit 8: R-Controlled Vowels
- Unit 9: Advanced Consonants (Silent Letters)
- Unit 10: Vowel Teams
- Unit 11: Vowel Digraphs and Diphthongs
- Unit 12: Decoding Multisyllabic Words Prefixes and Suffixes
