Description

If you’re looking for a simple, effective way to see what your students can really do as writers, these opinion writing prompts are perfect. Designed for grades 1–2, these on-demand prompts are ideal for writing assessments, quick writes, or as part of a balanced writing curriculum.

What makes my writing prompts unique is that they have the writing rubric printed directly on each prompt! This makes it crystal clear to students what expectations are--and makes grading SUPER fast and easy for you! No more stapling separate rubrics or rummaging through multiple pages. It's all together!

Unlike longer process writing projects, these short, structured prompts help you get an authentic snapshot of your students’ independent opinion writing skills. They also mirror the kind of real-world and standardized testing tasks your students will face in the future.

What’s included:

  • 8 reproducible opinion writing prompts
  • A student writing checklist
  • Class recording sheet for tracking whole-class performance
  • Individual student recording sheets for progress monitoring
  • Two formats of writing paper (with and without dotted midlines)
  • Teacher directions and suggestions for classroom use

Ways to use these prompts:

  • On-demand writing assessments (weekly, monthly, quarterly) to measure growth over time
  • Benchmark or diagnostic tools to pinpoint areas of need
  • Independent writing or literacy centers
  • Quick writes or warm-ups in your daily writing block
  • Small group practice or special education support
  • Evidence for parent conferences and progress reports

Process writing is essential, but demand writing shows you what students can do without support. With these opinion writing prompts, you’ll be able to collect meaningful writing samples, track growth, and give your students regular practice with independent, on-demand tasks.

I loved using this resource during our writing block, but also during our small group times. It allowed students time to write on their own with choice. Thank you!
