Description

This differentiated open-ended math project challenges 4th grade and 5th grade students with real-world problem solving centered around planning a Valentine's Day classroom celebration. Students apply money skills, addition and subtraction, basic multiplication, and multi-step problem solving through a low floor high ceiling task — at two levels so every learner is challenged.

This isn't a worksheet. It's a thinking task.

Your students are going to plan an entire Valentine's Day party — choosing treats, managing a budget, and figuring out how to serve everyone in the class. Two students can work on the same problem and come up with completely different answers. Both can be right. That's the point.

Note: The two levels in this resource are differentiated by money complexity — one version uses decimals and one uses whole dollar amounts only. This makes it especially easy to match the task to exactly where your students are.

What Makes This Different:

Regular word problems give students a question and expect one answer. This project gives students a real-world situation and asks them to figure out what to do with it — then defend their thinking in writing. The math is rigorous. The engagement is real. (Note: because this is a true open-ended task, there is no single answer key for the main project — that's intentional.)

What's Included:

  • "Math by the Numbers" data sheet in color, black and white, and digital versions — at two levels so you can use this with your whole class without anyone being left out or unchallenged
  • All reproducible student pages needed to tackle the task — including work space, recording sheets, and solution pages
  • Open-ended challenge with written justification built in
  • Follow-up reflection prompts
  • Three leveled practice pages (two levels each, answer keys included)
  • Discussion starters to deepen math talk
  • Extension ideas for students who want to go further
  • Digital access!

How Teachers Use This:

  • Whole-class problem solving with built-in differentiation
  • Math workshop or centers
  • Small group enrichment or TAG projects
  • Fast finisher work
  • Between-unit review
  • Sub plans

Also a strong fit for advanced 3rd grade students.

Why Teachers Love This:

  • Same task, two levels — your whole class works together without anyone feeling singled out
  • Students are talking, writing, collaborating, and actually thinking about math
  • No prep beyond printing — everything is ready to go
  • Real-world context makes the math feel meaningful, not manufactured
  • Students love having real choices — one reviewer noted a student wanted to come back the following year just to do this activity again!

This version focuses on money skills, addition and subtraction, basic multiplication, and multi-step problem solving. Two levels available: money with decimals or money with whole dollar amounts only.

It is ideal for 4th and 5th graders (and advanced 3rd graders) and could be used in other grade levels at your discretion.

What are teachers saying about this resource?

"One student told me he was going to come back to my class next year when I do this activity because he loved it so much. I believe they loved having the ability to decide what to spend their money on."

"Real-world application of math skills in a meaningful and rigorous way makes this math teacher very happy."

Great open-ended project for distance learning (or in person). Kids completed this in pairs in breakout rooms, but could be used individually or in small groups as well.

My students loved completing this as a center activity! It really showed how they use all kinds of different math in the real world. I love everything I've bought from this seller.
