Description

Soundation.com is a free online database of sound clips that allows students to explore sounds and combine them in new and exciting ways. This bundle contains three different units that you can use with your students either as a whole class, small groups, partners, or individual work. The three units include 4 assignments each to help the students learn various techniques in creating music, everything from dynamics to tempo, and from special effects to form. In addition, there are slides to walk you through creating accounts, turning in assignments, and troubleshooting common issues. The units are outlined below:

1. Multicultural composition: With this project, students can take a video of authentic performances and create their own spin-off using Soundation.com. This unit is so much more than lecturing on different cultures or singing one token African piece. It’s experiencing and exploring different musical cultures in a way that they will never forget.

2. Genre composition: This unit teaches students the small aspects of different genres, providing them with a way to immerse themselves in each style. Following this unit, students are able to discuss and justify their reasons for liking or disliking a genre with facts (i.e. "I like techno music because of the amount of electronic sounds that are layered together," or "I don't like classical music because of the types of instruments used").

3. Mood composition: I found this unit especially successful with younger students or with students struggling with emotional disabilities. This unit not only helps the students to explore what music helps them to feel different ways, but it helps the teachers to more fully understand what is happening inside the student's mind.

How to form a lesson around this unit:

1. Introduce the students to the website functions listed in the upper left hand corner of the slide.

2. As a class, create a sample project on the projector/smart board.

3. Send them to work individually on the assignment.

As the weeks progress, the students will become increasingly familiar with the website and will be able to use the more complex features.

I had a hard time figuring out Soundation at first because I didn't really have the time to sit down and dive into the program. But I really loved the instructions each slide gave!! Really cool resource!!
