Description

This lesson will walk students through the process of calculating the distances between two integers. Students will develop their own rules for finding the distance between numbers with the same sign and between numbers with opposite signs. Questions vary in difficulty, involve number-lines, real-world application and critical thinking questions.

Powerpoint and worksheet are aligned.

Awesome resource for pushing students' understanding of calculating the distances between positive and negative rational numbers. The first page is divided into 3 columns: multiple-choice questions, short response and extended response. The second page is divided into 4 sections: compute, justify, apply and create.

- Great for differentiation

- Great for challenging your high-level learners

- Promotes critical-thinking

- Great for stations or group work

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.7.NS.A.1.B Understand p + q as the number located a distance |q| from p, in the positive or negative direction depending on whether q is positive or negative. Show that a number and its opposite have a sum of 0 (are additive inverses). Interpret sums of rational numbers by describing real-world contexts.
