Through a series of warm up problems, guided notes, and worksheets, this unit addresses basic division of decimals, converting from fractions to decimals, terminating and repeating quotients, division with rounding, and order of operations problems. Yes, it IS
all right here! The warm up sheets contain thought-provoking questions to pique student interest. The scaffolded notes are stimulating and serve as an easy method for teachers to provide notes and guided practice. The math “poetry”, which is also included, increases students’ level of engagement and further cements concepts. The product also contains several well-thought-out worksheets and a review and unit assessment (all with accompanying detailed keys). If you are looking for an easy-to-teach, comprehensive method to cover division of decimals completely, this is the product for you!
Note 1: This product can also be purchased as part of a Complete Decimals Unit, but has been broken off as a separate product for those who would like to focus specifically on division of decimals. Those wishing to conduct a comprehensive decimals unit should purchase the Complete Decimals Unit: It's All Right Here product instead.
Note 2: This product assumes the students have some prior knowledge of decimal place value, ordering decimals, and using decimals with addition, subtraction, multiplication, and exponents. If necessary the teacher may need to do some review of these concepts prior to the start of this unit.
The product is broken into three different sets of warm-ups, notes, and worksheets. The first set introduces division with simple problems (that do not involve inserting additional zeroes in the dividend) to establish division terminology (“divisor”, “dividend”, “quotient”) and appropriate placement of the decimal point in the quotient. The second set (appropriately dubbed, “The Power of the Zero”), introduces a variety of problems that involve insertion of additional zeroes in the dividend. These include problems with terminating and repeating quotients, conversion of fractions to decimals, and order of operations problems involving division. The third set introduces the vital real-world concept of rounding, then tasks the students to find quotients and round the quotient to different decimal places. Word problems are embedded through all three sets of warm-up/notes/worksheets. The review and unit assessment immediately follow this third set of activities.
This is the ideal comprehensive dividing decimals unit for late elementary or early middle school. Feel free to review the preview file for details on all parts of this product.
Good luck in your use of Dividing Decimals – It’s All Right Here!
As mentioned above, if you are looking for a complete unit on decimals
, you should instead purchase Complete Decimals Unit: It's All Right Here
. This three week unit contains warm-ups, notes, worksheets, poetry, and activities to address decimal place value, ordering, adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing, order of operations, and word problems.
If you wish to address decimal place value
and ordering of decimals
, you may want to also purchase the product that contains only place value and ordering: Decimal Place Value Riddle Card Challenge
. Note that this product is also part of the Complete Decimals Unit
If your students are not familiar with how to execute operations in the correct order, you may want to go through part or all of Order of Operations Inundation
to address whole number expressions and PEMDAS prior to tackling order of operations expressions with decimals involved in the Dividing Decimals Unit
Finally, if you would like to cover division of fractions
either before or after division of decimals, please check out Fraction Division (Featuring Biff and Brandi's Big Bad Brownies)
which explores division of fractions in an engaging and creative way.
Feel free to also check out a growing number of other products that use poetry, songs, games, worksheets, and assessments to make math fun and help students learn a variety of common core math standards.
