Description

Introduce or review long division steps with this engaging note-taking math wheel format.

  • Students take notes, use color to help with memory, and complete practice problems found around the wheel.

What is a math wheel? A math wheel is a type of graphic organizer where students can:

  • Take notes inside the math wheel
  • Use color, drawing, and doodling to help create memory triggers
  • Complete practice problems in the pattern around the wheel, and
  • Color the background pattern

Students can keep these graphic organizers in their interactive notebooks all year as a resource/study tool.

  • You can even enlarge the math wheels and use them as posters or anchor charts!

There are TWO wheel options in this resource ~ one with 5 sections (new version) and one with 6 sections (original version).

The sections of the original dividing whole numbers wheel include:

1) Key Terms

2) Estimate

3) Set up the problem

4) Divide

5) Check

6) Compare to estimate

The sections of the newer, 5-section wheel include:

1) Key Terms

2) Estimate

3) Set up the problem

4) Divide

5) Check: the ‘Compare to estimate’ is included in this section instead of as a separate section

This easy-to-use long division resource includes:

1) THREE versions of each of the two student wheel options

  • ‘Open’ for students to write notes; this version is most flexible as you can use the notes/phrasing you want
  • ‘Fill-in’ notes; this version helps control student use of space and has less writing to do
  • Pre-filled notes for absentees or students who need pre-filled; answers to examples and practice problems are NOT on this version

⭐️Each version comes with a patterned background and with no pattern in the background.

2) Teacher key/wheel with completed notes and examples

3) Colored sample of original wheel

4) PowerPoint file with four editable wheel templates ~ you can add text to make your own math wheels, if you’d like (for classroom use only - not commercial use).

Features of this easy-prep division resource:

1) Notes sections and examples (notes are just suggestions, and you can alter them if you’d like, especially on the 'open' version)

2) Guided or independent practice: 8 problems in the pattern around the circle for students to practice dividing

3) Coloring/doodling opportunity: students can color the background pattern, as well as the headings and doodle arrows, however they like

Coloring the background, if you use the patterned versions:

  • Students don’t HAVE to color at all during instructional time….coloring the background could be an ‘early finisher’ activity, center activity, homework, etc.
  • Students don’t need to color every section of the background – part of their coloring pattern could be to leave sections white.
  • Students could color sections with patterns instead of solids – maybe polka dots in one section and squiggly lines in another.
  • This coloring part is just a chance to be creative and enjoy the stress-relief coloring can provide:-)

What teachers are saying about this division resource:

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “My students loved these wheels. I liked the practice problems along the outside to use for mastery. Thanks!”

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “My students enjoyed being able to be creative while doing math.”

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “Great resource for student engagement.”

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “Students and I am in love with all of the math wheels. The students pull the math wheels out before they pull out any other notes or resources.”
