Description

Make teaching about elements and the periodic table a game by turning your students in the ELEMENT HUNTERS! After choosing an element from the periodic table, students become the element expert, hunting down information about their chosen element and preparing a presentation for their classmates. The project includes a student presentation, a wanted poster, and a 3-D model.

A guided research project that allows students to explore elements on the periodic table. During this project students will:

  • Conduct research online and offline
  • Practice using proper source citations
  • Make an oral presentation with visual aids about an element on the periodic table
  • Have hands-on practice making an atom model

The lesson includes:

  • Student handout with instructions
  • Guided research worksheet
  • 5-point scale grading rubric
  • Teacher tips to make implementation easy!

The guided research worksheet is designed to help students take notes in an organized manner and collect citation information, allowing them to easily build a bibliography.


The lessons in this bundle support the following NGSS standards:

MS-PS1-1: Develop models to describe the atomic composition of simple molecules and extended structures.

This was a fun project for introducing the Periodic Table to my students. We worked on the first 20 elements with the goal of becoming element experts. The class had a lot of fun learning and presenting their element. At the end, I turned their presentations into a bulletin board.
