Description
A comprehensive unit that will help middle school students concretely understand the abstract concepts behind atoms and the periodic table. The unit includes the following:
Parts of an Atom Lesson - In this lesson students use color coding and creative writing techniques to concretely understand the subatomic particles that make an atom. Lesson includes note-taking guides, teacher tips, a creative writing activity and more.
Understanding Elements Lesson - This guided instruction lesson will help students concretely understand how to interpret information about the elements found on the periodic table. Lesson includes note-taking guides, practice worksheets, teacher tips and keys, and more.
Understanding the Periodic Table - In this lesson students will gain a better understanding of the periodic table and how it is organized. Lesson includes color-coding techniques for identifying parts of the periodic table, note-taking guides, teacher tips, practice worksheets and more.
Creating Bohr Diagrams - students will use their knowledge of atoms and the periodic table to construct 2 dimensional Bohr diagrams. Lesson includes rules for constructing Bohr diagrams, practice worksheets, teacher tips and key, and more.
Element Hunter's Project - In this student-led, research project, students research one of the first 18 elements on the periodic table. Students will create models, ads and presentations for their elements.
Lesson PowerPoint - The 42 slide PowerPoint provides a thorough teacher-led lesson for each of the 4 lessons included in the unit.
The lessons in this bundle support the following NGSS standards:
MS-PS1-1: Develop models to describe the atomic composition of simple molecules and extended structures.
