Description

Spectrum Sleuth: Color Quest – Engineering Design Process Edition!

Get students excited about real-world problem-solving with this STEM-powered Spectrum Sleuth: Color Quest! In this color-by-code activity, students analyze grouped statements about the Engineering Design Process (EDP), identify the incorrect one, and reveal a vibrant hidden image featuring rockets, puzzles, a pencil, light bulb, and even a 3D printer—while mastering one of the most important cycles in science and engineering education.

✅ What’s Included:

  • Color by Code Worksheet: A high-interest, printable sheet packed with creative engineering icons.
  • Statements Sheet: Students read and evaluate ten sets of statements about the EDP, identifying the false one in each set.
  • Answer Key: Allows for easy, accurate grading.
  • Review Slideshow: A visual, interactive presentation to walk through each statement and step of the process with your class.

How to Use:

  1. Start with a short overview of the Engineering Design Process (ask, imagine, plan, create, test, improve).
  2. Pass out the worksheet and statement sheet.
  3. Students determine which statement is inaccurate in each set and use the corresponding color to complete the image.
  4. Wrap up with a class discussion using the review slides to reinforce each phase of the design cycle.

Why Teachers Love It:

  • Perfect for STEM challenges, early finishers, or review days
  • Strengthens problem-solving and engineering literacy
  • Connects to NGSS engineering standards and crosscutting concepts
  • Students stay engaged through the mystery image reveal

By the end of the activity, students will not only know the steps of the EDP—they’ll understand how it’s used to solve problems creatively and collaboratively, just like real engineers.
