Your purchase includes both the printable packet and a digital version ready to use in Google Classroom. All 5th grade fractions standards are covered making this packet engaging and challenging for 5th grade students. The problems are rigorous making it perfect as a review unit for 6th grade students or for 4th graders that need enrichment.

The work in the packet does not ask students to use algorithms, rather it asks them to logically comprehend what is happening when we work with fractions. Using the storyline of a pizza parlor keeps the students engaged and motivated to use and understand fractions in a real-world way. We had our students complete the packet prior to learning algorithms for working with fractions, which allowed them the rigor and struggle that is so important for our students. It is kid tested and approved!

Bonus: 3 performance tasks are included with this purchase!

Possible Uses in the Classroom

Many pages can be used as performance tasks as well, or as formative assessments. Doing these with our students allowed us many opportunities to check in with them to ensure understanding. It was a great way for students to work at her own pace, and differentiation came naturally, as we were able to do daily one-on-one and small group teaching, while the rest of the class was happily engaged in the project. This happened authentically, and we repeatedly had opportunities to teach and reteach for individual needs. There were countless "ah ha" moments...a teacher's favorite sound!

Our students loved working in this packet! They found it to be engaging and especially fun to work on in pairs or small groups. Because it includes practice in all of the 5th grade CCSS, most 4th grade and some 6th grade standards this packet is entirely appropriate for all three grades and can be used in many different ways!

Suggested uses:

•Performance assessment(s)

•Review for unit test or state tests

•As early finisher work

•As enrichment

for an independent small group

•As a whole class –because the problems are designed for multiple solution paths, every problem provides a great opportunity for students to share how they approached the problem and arrived at a solution.

Skills reviewed include:

•Decomposing fractions and mixed numbers

•Using a variety of models-area, fraction and number lines to:

--Add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions and mixed numbers with unlike denominators

--Multiply and divide fractions and whole numbers

•Scaling-compare factor size

•Making equivalent fractions using area models and number lines

•Tiling to find area and perimeter of rectangles with fractional sides

•Solve real-world problems using area models, number lines, fraction models, pictures and equations

Met expectations
Great value
Standards-aligned
This resource was very helpful and easy to use in my classroom. The directions were clear, and my students were engaged throughout the activity. I appreciated how well it aligned with what I was teaching, and it required very little prep on my end. I will definitely be using this again in the future!

Compare two fractions with different numerators and different denominators, e.g., by creating common denominators or numerators, or by comparing to a benchmark fraction such as 1/2. Recognize that comparisons are valid only when the two fractions refer to the same whole. Record the results of comparisons with symbols >, =, or <, and justify the conclusions, e.g., by using a visual fraction model.
Understand a fraction 𝘢/𝘣 with 𝘢 > 1 as a sum of fractions 1/𝘣.
Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication to multiply a fraction by a whole number.
