Description

This worksheet contains 6 problems adding and subtracting mixed numbers with unlike denominators. Each problem shows 1-2 steps used to solve the problem and each problem contains an error. These errors were ones that I've seen 5th graders make in adding/subtracting mixed numbers.

Students must identify and name the error and then solve the problem correctly. This resource contains 3 different types of errors. It can be used as an early-finisher task, in class as a worksheet, as homework or as part of stations.

Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of fractions with like denominators. For example, 2/3 + 5/4 = 8/12 + 15/12 = 23/12. (In general, 𝘢/𝘣 + 𝘤/𝘥 = (𝘢𝘥 + 𝘣𝘤)/𝘣𝘥.)
