Description

Engage your entire class with a HANDS-ON Functions Escape Room!

This activity is Christmas themed and designed to split your class into two groups of 5 teams (10 teams total) who will then work together collaboratively to beat the clock. There are three total activities - each team will work on their activity and put their answers together to get the next clue. All activities are self-checking, meaning students do not check in with the teacher - once you set it up and say GO, the activity takes care of itself. You can purchase a tackle box and the locks (which provides the highest level of engagement) or students can ultimately break-in using digital codes onto a computer or smart phone. Please check out the preview to see the required items and optional items. Whether you use the locks or the digital break-in, this is a hands on activity! It is recommended to give yourself at least one week to get all the materials ready.

This Functions Escape Room Activity will practice the following concepts: identifying a rate of change from an equation and given variables, determining if a relation is a function from tables, graphs, mapping diagrams, and ordered pairs, and identifying a rate of change and initial value from a verbal description and filling out its function table. It is a great way to review before an end of unit or chapter test on functions. Fits right in with 8th Grade Math, Algebra 1, or Integrated Math 1.

My students enjoy escape activities that use actual locks. This was a great way to give my classes a review during a time in the school year when attention begins to wane. The collaboration within the groups was good and I heard great math talk going on while the kids were working.

Understand that a function is a rule that assigns to each input exactly one output. The graph of a function is the set of ordered pairs consisting of an input and the corresponding output.
Construct a function to model a linear relationship between two quantities. Determine the rate of change and initial value of the function from a description of a relationship or from two (𝘹, 𝘺) values, including reading these from a table or from a graph. Interpret the rate of change and initial value of a linear function in terms of the situation it models, and in terms of its graph or a table of values.
