Description

This exponential decay activity is a hands-on math lesson designed for Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 students to explore exponential functions through data, graphs, and modeling. It works well as a concept launch, exploration activity, or discussion starter when introducing exponential decay.

Students analyze a real-world situation, look for patterns, and connect their observations to an exponential model without relying on formulas or procedures upfront.

Optional extension tasks allow teachers to deepen student thinking by examining how changes to a situation affect an exponential model, making the activity flexible for multiple levels.

This was a great activity to reinforce exponential functions as you begin the unit. The students can "see" the decay in the activity and how it relates to the graph and table of data. It also allows them to think about the line as it approaches the asymptote and what this means in "real life." Fun, quick, and easy.

I love having this tangible evidence to prove something my students do not always believe and then link it to exponential functions. This makes exponential functions much less scary for my students.

With slight modifications to fit my own student and curriculum needs, this resource was a great, exciting, hands on way to explore exponential decay. This was a great exploratory activity for them to observe how decay works before we moved on to more complex word problems.
