Description

This Fall Math Mystery - 6th Grade Edition - “The Case of The Furious Fall Winds” is a fun autumn math activity, where students must solve a variety of math clues to help catch the criminal vandalizing the home of Sheldon, The Shaman of Seasons!

Easy prep! Just Print & Solve! Or go paperless with the new Google Slides option provided within your download.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Optional video hook included for introducing the case (now with a voiceover)! (Check it out in the preview section)

BONUS: Ending video added to wrap up the case!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Distance Learning Update: I've added a Word Document within the folder that contains a Google Doc link to share this resource with your students via Google Classroom or Drive. Parts of the pages are editable so that your students can complete them without printing the pages. Please note that you will need to make a copy of the Google Slides to your drive before you can edit.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Preparation

- Print the student pages, staple or place them in a folder, and your students are set to go.

- Have the video hook ready for viewing at the start of the lesson on an IWB, iPad, or computer monitor screen.

- Digital option: Make digital copies of the Google Slides before assigning to Google Classroom

- Editable suspects list included: This enables you to change the suspect names and alter the mystery outcome. Two alternative pre-made lists are also included for a quick swap out.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This fall, Mathhattan has been experiencing some furious winds. But these winds are no ordinary winds; if anyone is pulling a face while the wind blows over them, it will stay that way! A great math detective is needed to calm Sheldon the Shaman down by finding out who is trying to blackmail him into changing the season back to summer!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Math Skills Required to Unlock Clues

There are five clues to crack to solve the mystery:

  • Clue 1: Ratios - Write a ratio to describe objects in a picture (no simplifying)
  • Clue 2 : Adding and Subtracting Mixed Number Fractions
  • Clue 3: Addition and Subtraction Algorithms (mixtures of whole and decimal numbers)
  • Clue 4: Least Common Multiple
  • Clue 5: Complete the Addition/Subtraction/Multiplication/Division Sentence (fill in the missing number)

Students must use critical thinking skills to figure out what the clue is telling them to eliminate from the list of elf suspects.

>> Pack includes a mystery declaration sheet, answer sheets, an elimination guide, and printable awards.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Multiple Uses

- Suitable for independent, pairs, or group work.

- Use as part of your math centers, add to your sub tubs, make it part of your early finisher tasks, give for homework, or make it part of your classroom practice/review sessions.

I recommend pacing this activity by giving students one clue at a time. Once the whole class has completed a clue, then move on to the next clue either within the same lesson or the next math session. New math content presented? Make a lesson out of it by modeling the math before diving into the clue. I like to say, "we must learn something new before attempting the next clue."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How long will this activity take?

The time to complete will vary anywhere between 30mins - 2 hours or more! It mainly depends on how familiar your students are with the math mystery format, as well as how difficult they find math skills covered in the particular mystery. Please check the math skills outlined in the clues above to help determine suitability for your class.

Fluently add, subtract, multiply, and divide multi-digit decimals using the standard algorithm for each operation.
Find the greatest common factor of two whole numbers less than or equal to 100 and the least common multiple of two whole numbers less than or equal to 12. Use the distributive property to express a sum of two whole numbers 1–100 with a common factor as a multiple of a sum of two whole numbers with no common factor.
