Description
This self-checking, color by code algebra activity gives your students a fun and creative way to practice solving multi-step equations with variables on both sides. Students will first solve twelve multi-step equations. After finding all twelve solutions, students will compare their answers from the left column (letters) to the answers from the right column (colors). Each answer should have a matching answer in the other section. Finding the matching solutions provides students with the correct color code to complete the “Thankful for Math” letters on the back. The image on the back also includes two spaces so that students can share two other things they are thankful for this season (other than math of course!).
Should I really use coloring activities in my upper elementary/middle school math class? Yes! Here’s why…
- Coloring activities provide the teacher with a way to quickly assess student understanding. When circulating the room checking in on students, it’s easy to see if someone’s picture is looking off alerting you that they may need some assistance.
- Coloring activities make self-checking easy for students. If they are not finding any correct matches they know something is off and they may need to go back and rework a problem.
- Most students are more likely to stay on task versus completing a traditional worksheet because they want to see how it turns out. It also gives them an opportunity to express themselves artistically. Even though the majority of the picture is going to be the same for each student, I love seeing how different students put their own creative touches on the picture.
- Upper elementary/middle school students still love seeing their work displayed! Students feel a sense of pride and accomplishment when their work is displayed, and most importantly, they feel valued.
