Finding Context Clues

Description

We teach our students that it is important to look around a word in order to assume what the word means. Using context clues is an important part of annotating a text. Use this worksheet to help the students make a list of the words they do not immediately recognize. The procedure is:
1. After reading and annotating the text, make a list of the unknown words in the "Unknown Words" column.
2. Using context clues, write what you THINK the words mean in the box to the right of each unknown word.
3. Using either the internet from a device or a dictionary, the student will then look up the word's correct definition.

This is a great activity during reading and text annotation. I even allow my students to work with partners as they research the correct definitions!
