Description
Grade 1 Module 2 Lesson 1 Topic A: This product is part of a series that double as digital lessons for the Concept Development portion of the Engage New York Eureka lessons and also has interactive Google slides for student practice. Join the Math Detectives as they travel to space and find a ten to add three numbers. The goal of this lesson is to join two numbers to make a friendly ten for easier addition of the third number.
The Math Detectives travel to space and investigate the most efficient way to add three numbers when two groups can be joined together to make a friendly ten. The lesson starts with the first planet they land on where they spy aliens in groups of 9, 1, and 4. The Math Detectives join the 9 aliens and the 1 alien to make ten. Then they model a simple addition of 10+4. The Math Detectives have many more space adventures in this product and come across more word problems which call for addition of 3 numbers, 2 of which make 10.
Following the lesson are independent slides containing drag and drop activities which students can move around the aliens and comets to create friendly 10 groups. Some also contain fill ins to construct number sentences with the total sum (text boxes are set up and ready as is). The slides are scaffolded to provide for differentiated instruction amongst each learner's individual needs. The moveable clipart images I have created for this product only. Please follow the TOU for these images and do not copy or resell.
This product promotes independence by following the model "I do, we do, you do" for gradual release of responsibility for students to become independent in mastering this objective as the Math Detectives ask questions and students are encouraged to discuss and draw on their whiteboards during the lesson. Independent slides are scaffolded to meet the needs of various learners. PLEASE NOTE: The lesson portion is to be displayed in present mode. The independent slides are only interactive when completed in edit mode.
This product has 20 interactive Google slides for independent or small group practice after the whole group lesson to be shared on your interactive whiteboard or other screen. The practice portion can be assigned in Google Classroom or Seesaw (again: this portion is interactive only when in edit mode but can be presented in present mode and annotated using Smartboard tools or Zoom annotation tools if using them as guided practice done together).
This lesson supports CCSS Operations and Algebraic Thinking, particularly CCSS.1.OA.2 and CCSS.1.OA.6. It also reinforces critical mathematical practices, particularly MP7. It is designed for early first grade (more specifically it is aligned with Module 2 Lesson 1 of Eureka) but can also be used for second half of kindergarten to address operations and algebraic thinking standards or as a second grade review. Please note that this product can be incorporated into any curriculum to enhance the comprehension of the CCSS and math practices that are universally taught.
The slides in this product line are designed to appear as though you are looking through binoculars, using a camera to take photos, using a magnifying glass, using a telescope, and taking notes on a notepad - just like a real detective hunting for number clues! This lesson will help your kiddos conceptualize fluency and practice numbers and operations in base ten.
The scenes in this product presents a storyline similar to word problems and promotes problem-solving skills that are mainly designed to promote student discourse and discussion to learn to explain their mathematical thinking.
Use this lesson as whole group shared on your Interactive whiteboard in the classroom, share on your screen on Google Meet or Zoom for distant learning, or displayed for a small group lesson. Remember, use the lesson portion in present mode! Each slide is annotated with dialogue in speech bubbles to guide your lesson, but feel free to make it your own! These lessons cover the Concept Development portion of Eureka lessons (but will enhance any curriculum addressing Common Core State Standards) and serve as an engaging visual lesson for your students, all while making it no-prep for you as the teacher! Each slide is designed to serve as a foundation for which math discourse in the classroom can build and grow!
After the lesson are the independent slides for students. You can assign these slides in Google Classroom or on Seesaw (or any other program that supports Google slide products). Simply hold "ctrl" to select the slides you want to assign, go to file and make a copy. From there you can assign as you normally would on your preferred digital platform. These slides are interactive when in edit mode only! These slides are great as a supplement for the Problem Set in Eureka, independent practice, homework, early finishers, or for virtual math centers.
